Welcome to HYO
In the 1970s, my mother immigrated to the United States in search of a better life, filled with more opportunities for her children. Following a Korean custom, my mother’s marriage to my father, a U.S. citizen adopted by dairy farmers in Wisconsin, was arranged by her uncle.
Despite not speaking the same language, they overcame many barriers—my mother teaching herself English—and worked tirelessly, holding multiple jobs to make ends meet. Every penny they earned had a purpose, always prioritizing family over their own needs.
My parents raised me to embrace the American way of life, hoping to shield me from the prejudices and hardships they faced as non-native English speakers. In 2020, during the pandemic, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As one of her caretakers, I learned to prepare the traditional Korean dishes she made for me growing up, deepening my connection to her and our heritage.
The Korean word “HYO” means duty to one’s parents, and it is in that spirit that I continue to honor her legacy through the food she lovingly prepared. I hope to share her story, love, and spirit with you through these dishes, keeping her memory alive in every meal.
